In March of last year, 27-year-old Delsy Gouw quit her salaried job at a marketing company. Her boss was confused and gently prodded for a reason. Gouw decided honesty was the best policy; she wanted to dedicate more time to crocheting. “I couldn’t really keep a straight face,” Gouw recalls of the exchange. Her boss kindheartedly suggested Gouw dedicate her weekends to the craft. “I was like, ‘No, I can’t,’” Gouw says. That’s because what started out as a pandemic hobby for Gouw had unexpectedly blossomed into a full-fledged brand of hats, bikini sets, and tops called Memorial Day. Bella Hadid, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and other boldface names were snapped wearing Gouw’s one-of-one creations out and about. She soon found herself struggling to keep up with orders and hired her mother, who lives in Indonesia, to assist with practical matters. Flash-forward to today and Gouw now employs a growing network of friends, family, and artisans based in Indonesia. The designer, who performs quality control through text and FaceTime, says running a brand with no design or business experience is challenging for sure. “There are some days I want to opt out and not wonder, ‘Am I gonna make enough money this month?’” she says. But she doubts she’ll return to more stable and predictable full-time work anytime soon. “I wouldn’t trade it,” she says of swapping 9-to-5 life for running her own business. “I’ll complain! But I’ll still be here.”
Welcome to the post-COVID fashion landscape. A sizable number of buzzy small brands were launched during the pandemic—and, amazingly, have only grown in popularity and validity since. The bulk of these new companies are run by 20-somethings with zilch experience in design or business. There’s the irony-laden brand Praying, started by software engineer Skylar Newman and architect Alex Haddad; the kidcore-adjacent accessories brand Ian Charms, led by former reality television production assistant Lisa Sahakian; the corset-obsessed brand Fancí Press, helmed by popular Depop seller turned designer Duy Tran. This cohort of designers turned their hobbies into new beginnings. “We were both pretty not into our jobs,” says Haddad, who cofounded Praying in 2020 with his friend Newman. So when their offices pivoted to remote work, they began designing tees and sweatshirts built for virality. A pair of jeans would, say, feature portraits of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and the peak mid-aughts nickname Brangelina. And TikTok star Addison Rae sparked a flurry of conversation and controversy when she wore the brand’s popular Holy Trinity bikini set. Some members of the Christian community claimed that wearing a bra with “Father,” “Son,” and “Holy Spirit” printed on it in strategic placements was “blasphemy.” The controversy only made Praying pieces more popular.
Wearing Chloé, Holmes sported a white leather dress that had woven and whipstitched detailing, as well as a fringed hemline. The cooler fall months are the ideal time to wear such a hefty textile, and she paired the statement frock with one of the season’s must-have shoes, a chunky lace-up oxford. Who says you need to totter around in heels to look put-together? (Plus, these can be worn to work or on a night out). To give the whole ensemble more of a polished feel, she then added a black double-breasted blazer overtop, as well as discreet black leather clutch. Combined, it was the perfect mixture of classic, edgy, and fun. The question is: Will she be hitting up any other fashion week shows these next few days? Keep your eyes peeled!
