Chloë Sevigny once had a plastic box filled with Balenciaga wool suits created by Nicholas Ghesquière from his first season for the French house in 1997. Unfortunately, they are gone. The all-too-common culprit? Moths. Ghesquière-era Balenciaga wasn’t the only victim: a whole box of Alaïa was devoured too. (“The vintage Balenciaga really hurt me because they probably didn’t produce very many of those,” Sevigny tells Vogue.) Sevigny now won’t have to deal with that again thanks to The Wardrobe, a company run by Julie Ann Clauss, an archiving pioneer who mostly works with high-profile clients and designers to preserve their most treasured clothes. The connection happened over Instagram. According to Sevigny, Clauss had commented something funny on her Instagram. (“I think it had to do with the Kardashian cutting the Comme des Garçons skirt short,” Sevigny says.) Intrigued, the actor saw that Clauss had an archiving business. Sevigny—a frequently mood-boarded celebrity who often holds an annual sale with her friends—had a host of sentimental clothes she hadn’t been able to part with. “I’ve just been holding onto this for so long, and I’ve been like, What do I do with it? Why am I holding onto it?” Sevigny says. “Am I even holding onto it correctly, if I am holding onto it?”Sevigny walking the spring 1996 Miu Miu show. Photo: Courtesy of Getty Images
Clauss came to the rescue. An archiving savant, Clauss worked in-house at Gucci under Tom Ford and was in charge of archiving collections. After 14 years, Clauss segued into working part-time for Ford and began to take on more clients, celebrities and private collectors, that had a range of brands from Marc Jacobs to Calvin Klein and Carolina Herrera. Sevigny was in good hands. Clauss’s knowledge of clothing storage is unbeatable. During our call, she rattles off facts and tips, noting that the biggest mistake people make is leaving dry cleaning bags (“the plastic traps chemicals”) and that space-saving huggable hangers are a no-no (“It’s actually going to ruin the neck and shoulder line of your garment over time.”) For The Wardrobe’s clients, Clauss keeps a moth-free archival facility in Los Angeles that is quite literally museum-worthy. The space is outfitted with temperature and humidity controls and has air filtration.
The appeal of the leather motorcycle jacket is timeless—it’s a classic that the likes of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford were known for sporting throughout the ’90s. Candace Bushnell may have said it best when she mused, “Manolos and Champagne—a dream!” The Sex and the City author captured the sentiment of other well-heeled guests at a cocktail party on Wednesday night at the Manolo Blahnik flagship store on Madison Avenue. Indeed, Bushnell glided (in pristine fresh-of-out-the-box footwear) into fashion’s first big soirée of party season. The evening’s hosts: Over The Moon, Markarian, DeBeers, and Manolo. The boutique’s Old Hollywood interior design was the perfect backdrop for the evening’s entertainment: Models flitted about the room in Markarian’s new Spring bridal collection with Gatsby-worthy sequins, fringe, and more. And, there was no shortage of sparkle, as DeBeers jewels were on display so guests could capture the perfect 10-carat selfie. The style set was in full force, and in a room-full of hundreds of Manolos, quite literally, nearly every partygoer had a Cinderella moment and tried on the shoe—or two!—of their dreams before the clock struck midnight.
