Britbox is one of many niche offerings in the streaming world, but if you’re into UK telly, this subscription offers just about the richest selection of shows you can find. And it’s the only place to check out Sherwood, an elegantly constructed procedural about a murder in Nottinghamshire which is based on real events from 2004. Sherwood has electrified critics in the UK with its storyline about tensions from decades-old miners’ strikes that simmer in this part of England—and it features two of the UK’s finest acting stalwarts in David Morrissey and Lesley Manville. —Taylor Antrim There are probably reasons to be cautious about Shantaram–Apple TV+’s series based on the 2003 bestselling novel by Gregory David Roberts about an Australian bank robber on the run in Bombay. Various adaptations of the novel have been in the works for years and the trailer struck me as mixed bag, with a melodramatic voice over, but also full of transporting and gritty Indian scenery. For me the draw is Charlie Hunnam, an English heartthrob actor best known for the biker series Sons of Anarchy who has turned in nuanced work in indie films like The Lost City of Z and The True History of the Kelly Gang. Let’s see if he can carry this 1980s-set noir-ish thriller to success. —T.A.

What is there to say about Quinta Brunson’s mockumentary sitcom, which expertly satirizes the everyday hilarities of working in an elementary school, that hasn’t been said already? There’s a reason the show is beloved by real-life teachers, and with a rash of Emmy nominations under its belt and a ton of buzz behind it, Season 2 of Abbott Elementary is all but guaranteed to be a hit. —Emma Specter AMC is betting big on the bloodthirsty this season, putting this series based on Anne Rice’s 1976 novel and subsequent sequels in prime position following The Walking Dead. The show, about a fraternity of elegant but tortured vampires, retains the original story-within-a-story framework, now set in the pandemic present with frequent flashbacks to 1910s New Orleans. But now a heavy vein of race and sexuality flows through the series; Louis (played by Jacob Anderson, known for his work as Grey Worm in Game of Thrones) is a Creole entrepreneur embarking on a torrid romance with Frenchman Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid). Expect iffy accents, men with long nails, and plenty of blood, nudity, and color contacts. —L.W.M.

The leaves are turning, the air is crisp, and Starbucks won’t stop emailing me about pumpkin spice lattes being back on the menu—all of which means it’s fall, and luckily, we’ve got plenty of good TV options to lose ourselves in this season. Honestly, why go apple-picking when you could stay inside, burn your autumnal candle of choice, and enjoy some brand-new televised fare? Below, find your guide to the buzziest new fall shows coming to your TV (or laptop, we’re not here to judge) this fall. In the fourth and final season of this groundbreaking series Earn, Al, Darius, and Van have managed to extricate themselves from the nightmare-scape of their western Europe tour and are back in the ATL—but as always, mischief (and sometimes downright terror; see Teddy Perkins) finds them wherever they land. You won’t want to miss the finale of one of the truly visionary TV shows of our generation. — Lisa Wong Macabasco
